Ten years ago, in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, Joe McNally — LIFE magazine’s last-ever staff photographer — wondered how he might commemorate not only the victims of the terror attacks, but the survivors he saw working day after day, night after night, at Ground Zero. From that wrenching question, his monumental Faces of Ground Zero project was born.
